Larry Smith Photos from the Past: Greensburg Gulf

2008-06-24 - Green Co., KY - Photo From the collection of Larry Smith, boy radio announcer.
Historic Greensburg Kentucky
Larry Smith, news anchor at 92.7 The Wave, brought out this photo from the past, and writes, "This is another reminder the days of full service gas stations that are few and far between today. However, this photo of the old Greensburg Gulf Station on Columbia Highway in Greensburg taken in the late 50's featured a full service gas attendant maintaining that famous statement, "Check you oil?" Times have sure changed over the years. May this photo be another reminder of "Days gone by," and help us to envision our past." It might be a big surprise to see the prices on the pumps, likely less than 10 percent of today's prices. Gulf is the predecessor company to today's "BP" (British Petroleum) stations. Columbia had one, operated by Willard Cheatham, at the corner of Burkesville & Fortune Streets, where the Chamber is today and another Gulf Station, owned by Mr. Jones, was in the building on Russell Road which now houses the telephone and the cleaners stores. The cars appear to be late 1940s models.
