WRH Aux News: Jelaine Phillips speaks on smoking issues

Auxiliary's major committees named for coming year

By Sue C. Stivers, Membership & Public Relations ChairmanThe Westlake Regional Hospital Auxiliary met Monday, June 16, 2008, at th Hospital Cafe beginning at 6:30pmCT. President Margaret Sparks called the meeting to order and welcomed those in attendance.

Secretary Sharon Harris read the minutes of the past meeting. The financial report was given by Treasurer Evelyn Phelps.




President Sparks thanked all the auxiliary members who volunteer their time in working in the gift shop. If others would like to volunteer they are asked to contact President Sparks at (270) 384-4139.

''A get well card was signed by everyone and will be sent to Louise Brock, one of our dear members. We hope to see her at our next meeting. It was reported that another one of our dear members, Doris Beard, was back in Medco Nursing Home having a rehab. A "thinking of you" card was signed and will be sent to her.

President Sparks appointed the following committees who wil serve for one year:
  • Calling Committee: Chairman Shirley Grider, and Dorothy Murray, Eva Wilkinson, Zona Royse, and Shirly Reliford

  • Cards and flowers: Shirley Grider and Yvonne Marshall

  • Landscaping: Jim Hagan, Charles and Yvonne Marshall, and Betty Thorsen

  • Entertainment: Marilyn Hunter, Mary Evelyn Walker, Sue Stivers, and Eva Wilkinson

  • Ways & Means: Charles Barnes, Louise Brock, Mary Hadley, and Pauline Davenport

  • Membership and public Relations: Chairman, Sue Stivrs, Shirley Reliford, Sharon Harris, and Betty Flaynik

  • Gift Shop: Chairman Margaret Sparks, Shirley grider, Evelyn Phelps, and Dorthy Murray.
The guest speaker for the evening was Jelaine Phillips, Health Educator at the Adair County Health Department, who gave an interesting and educational program entitled "Smoking: What we know and we we can do to eliminate it." She shared statistics and data concerning the effects of smoking and the effects of second hand smoking regarding the health of individuals.

Very few in attendance realized that second hand smoke was so deadly. A special "thank you" to Jelaine for making us aware of how harmful smoke can be to our health and for making us aaware of the number of restaurants and businesses that are now smoke free.

Hostesses were Marily Hunter and Margaret Sparks, who served an array of delicious refreshments to the following: Wanda Bardin, Charles Barnes, Pauline Davenport, Betty Flaynik, Mary Hadley, Sharon Harris, Charles Marshall, Dorothy Murray, Evelyn Phelps, Jelaine Phillips, Shirley Reliford, Sue Stivers, Betty Thorsen, and Eva Mac Wilkinson.

The next meeting will be july 15, 2008, beginning at 6:00pm, with a potluck "salad supper." The speaker will be Sheila McKinley, a speech pathologist. For information on becoming a member of the Auxiliary, contact President Margaret Sparks at (270) 384-4139 or any Auxiliary member. Dues are only $5.00 per year. The Welcome Mat is always out for new members.
