LWC Master of Education program begins June 25, 2008 Master of Education Program AcceptingApplications for Summer ClassesProgram can be completed in less than 14 months By Duane Bonifer Lindsey Wilson College continues to take applications for the start of its master of education program. The deadline to apply to the program, which begins this summer, is June 25, 2008. The 30-hour program will be offered on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Students will be able to their degreem which will lead to a Rank II for teachers, in less than 14 months. Classes for the first cohort begin in June and July of 2008 and conclude in July of 2009. "This is a unique education graduate program because it was created for working teachers," said LWC Associate Professor Fred Smiley. "The program's goal is to help produce better teachers for our region's schools." In Kentucky, public school teachers are required to have a master's degree within 10 years after they begin teaching. The LWC program will allow teachers who are at a Rank III level to move to a Rank II level. The curriculum for the master's program was created with help from public school officials. "That's why we created a program in a cohort format, one that offers face-to-face instruction, with online components, and courses that cover the areas of teacher leadership, computers, classroom management, assessment, diversity and special education," Smiley said. "That's what area principals and superintendents told us they wanted the program to have." Another one of the program's unique features is that students will be monitored by their site principal. And instead of writing a thesis, students will complete two projects to aid their school sites or districts.
