Columbian Theatre Playbill: March 1956

2008-05-23 - Columbia, KY - Photo By Kim Marshall Brian.
OLD COLUMBIAN STILL IN THEIR HEARTS: Kim Marshall Brian sent this show calendar with a note: "Mom and Dad had this 'playbill'from the Columbian Theatre from 1956. Dad has had it in a frame for years and is in excellent condition. Mom, Dad and I wanted to share it with Ed for Columbia Magazine if he found it to be ok. We thought some of the readers might get a kick out of some of these movies. We still have the old Columbian in our hearts!!" Kim Brian's parents are of course, Charles and Yvonne Marshall. Our thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Marshall and Kim Marshall Brian for sharing the memory. Time was, every home in Columbia kept the picture show calendar hanging in a prominent place, right over, or next to, their Reed Brothers, Barger Insurance, or Standard Oil of Kentucky wall calendar. Also worth a note that is the fine bargain on Saturdays. Always a double feature, they didn't even have to advertise that, in addition to previews and local advertising, the two main films were accompanied by a cartoon, and, quite often, a serial which could continue for months. The Columbian Theatre, now owned by Dr. Ben Arnold, remains a major distinction for Columbia today, 60 years after it was built. Clicking Read More accesses the "Today, Fri. May 23, 2008" feature.

At Bearwallow Cemetery

2008-05-23 - Near Christine, KY, Hwy 206, Adair County, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
GLADYS McQUAIDE and sister BERTHA GOODIN were at the Bearwallow Cemetery on Thursday, May 22, 2008, two of several families who have already started paying homage to family members passed on. They see to the graves of their mother and father and of Mrs. McQuaide's late husband, Harry McQuaide as well as other relatives. Both have attended services at the church since it was a United Brethren in Christ congregation, before the denominational merger made it a United Methodist Church. The sisters operated a Goodin's Rest Home at Christine for many years, until a tornado severely damaged it. Gladys McQuaide later owned and operated the Montgomery Ward Store in Columbia and Bertha Goodin continued her career with retired people needing care, working for seven years at Summit Manor in Columbia. The cemetery will be one of the busiest locations in Adair County during the holiday weekend.

The Crusade for Children, ca 50 years ago

2008-05-23 - Russell Road, E80, Columbia, KY - Photo From the Eddie Kessler Collection.
The CRUSADE for CHILDREN has a great tradition in Columbia. The photo above, sent to us by Eddie Kessler of Kessler Mortgage Co, Columbia, KY. appears to be from the 1950's. The firemen appears to be the late Gaspard Brockman, who was the proprietor of Columbia General Appliances for many years. Perhaps someone will recognize the man in the car and the child in the back seat. Some things remain the same in the scene, looking east. On the left, there is a sign for the Lakeway Motel, then owned and operated by Leo and Charlotte Wheatley. In the distance, on the right, the Gulf Service Station operated by Mr. Jones, and over the sign, what may be "Hill Oil Company," the bulk plant owned by Eddie Hill. Just beyond the tip of the brim of Mr. Brockman's hat is the Circle R, which closed after a fire. The big frame house was built by the Jessie Keith family. It was later razed to make way for the Dairy Chick Drive-in restaurant, owned by J.D. Harper and Warren Webb. And the jeep is parked on the lot of the late Clyde and Anna Young's Adair Builders' Supply. That building now is a Tommy Grider property. The jeep may or may not be the famous restored by Darrell Young. All corrections and additions are welcome.
