Hannah Peck one of 18 KY students to win Byrd scholarship 2008 Adair County Graduate will attend Lindsey Wilson College where she is one of only three incoming Begley Scholars Hannah Peck has been awarded a Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship to help pay for her college education. This scholarship award is $1,500 a year for four years of college. Peck is a 2008 graduate of Adair County High School. She will attend Lindsey Wilson College to study history. She is one of only three incoming Begley Scholars at Lindsey Wilson. "The Byrd Scholarship provides valuable financial help for many students," she said. "This provides opportunity for the younger generation to obtain a college education and give back to their community." While at ACHS, Ms. Peck was on the basketball, softball and cross country teams and was a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, Student Council, Pride Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Pep Club. She is one of only 84 seniors in the state this year to receive a Byrd Scholarship, a federally funded program administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). KHEAA also administers other student aid programs, including the Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship, where students earn money for college by making good grades in high school. Peck is the daughter of John and Susan Peck of Russell Springs. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eldridge Richards of Jamestown and Dr. and Mrs. Charles E. Peck of Russell Springs. Peck is the second Adair Countian in the last two years to win the prestigious scholarship. Last Jacob Edwards, Columbia, was awarded the scholarship. He is a student at Centre College. The Byrd Scholarship is named for longtime U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, who authored the legislation establishing the program in 1985. Kentucky receives enough funding to award scholarships to 84 high school seniors each year, with 14 chosen from each of the state's six congressional districts. Recipients are chosen by an independent panel, based on academic achievement, community service, school involvement and counselor recommendation. KHEAA and its sister agency, The Student Loan People, administer student financial aid programs to help Kentuckians pay for college.
