Watching the Waste 2: City's tipping costs climb in April 2008 April tipping fee for City of Columbia up $898.32 in April, over March, 2008; 90% or total cost, equal in April to $14,106.56 should have been save by aggressive recycling, composting, advocates of recycling say. To read Watching the Waste 1, Click Here By Ed Waggener Despite the tremendous success of the Adair County Recycling Center's program, the solid waste cost for the City of Columbia headed skyward in the Month of April.
The April figures do not include the cost of the April Spring PRIDE Clean-up, according to Columbia City Clerk Carolyn Edwards. The increase cost to the Columbia Sanitation Department in the month was $898.32, which annualizes to an increase of $10,959.504. The figures are even more dismaying when it appears that the major recycling effort by the Adair County Recycling center has removed a considerable volume of trash formerly hauled by the City Sanitation Department. In the county as a whole, 35 businesses are now on the Honor Roll of Recyclers. Most of recyclers are located within the limits of Columbia. Aggressive recycling and composting efforts could keep as much as 90% of the community's solid waste out of the landfill, environmental activist Barbara Armitage estimates. It's possible, she says, with an organized, supported program. This story was posted on 2008-05-17 09:09:24
