Big iris bed on KY 206 gets lots of lookers

2008-05-17 - KY 206 at Beulah Chapel, between Garlin and Vester, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
WANDA CORBIN says she gets a lot of compliments on her irises. "But they not mine," she admits. Geneva Yarberry, her neighbor, in the photo above, is responsible for the large bed of perennials which brighten KY 206 just east of Taylor Ford Road. She says a lot of people stop and ask her how she grows them to be so pretty. She says she uses no special growing technique, applies no fertilizer. She does plant and replant from time to time to give a changing spectrum of color, which includes white, black, red, yellow, peach, lavender, midnight, rust, one called "looped-de-loop" and every shade of blue. Plant geneticists are changing the old fashioned flowers somewhat. Older varieties have smooth edged petals; newer ones are ruffled edged and have thin color striations. Folks tend to think the flowers belong to Wanda Corbin because the bed is closer to her house, but she said that good neighbor Geneva Yarberry planted them to the far side of her own yard, nearer to Wanda Corbin's, so Ms. Corbin could enjoy them, too. That's the way folks are in this neighborhood.
