Redundant water plant closure will have to wait 1 more week By Ed Waggener A special called meeting of the Columbia Utilities Commission, scheduled for 10:00amCT this morning could not be held for lack of a quorum. The now redundant Columbia Utilities Commission water plant will continue in standby mode for another week, when the matter of its closure will be considered in the regular monthly meeting of the lame duck commission on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at 11:30amCT. The meeting was to finalize the shutdown of the Columbia Water Plant. But Commissioner David Wells was unable to attend. With the decision not to fill vacant commission seats, all three currently sitting members must to be present for a quorum, since the ordinance governoring the board sets its membership at five. Columbia Water & Sewer Superintendent Dana Rogers said that the cost of the extra week of operation should be small. "We'll run the plant eight hours a day, but we won't be producing water, so electricity cost will be low and there won't be any chemicals used." The meeting was also attended by Lenny Stone, Manager of the Adair County Water District and the Adair County Water Treatment Plant, and David Bowles, engineer with Monarch Engineering Co. "We have a consensus to close the plant," Superintendent Rogers said, "but the closing won't take place until the Commission meets and officially authorizes me to close it."
