Gas Price Drumbeat: Stop driving so much Writer suggests looking to President, US Representatives and US Senators with concerns over high gas prices, not CJE and Mayor To ColumbiaMagazine.com Every time I drive by a gas station it sickens me to know how much money my family is spending each week on gas for our cars. I can't help but reminisce about the "good ole days" of 2005 when gas was only $2.00/gallon. The thing I don't understand though is the impression which exists within our community that our elected officials have any real influence over what the gas prices are in Columbia and Adair County. I realize that we think being "mayor," "city councilmen," or "county judge" in a community like our own is a big deal and carries a lot of responsibility, which it does; however, in the grand scheme of global oil prices their "influence" doesn't carry much weight (no offense intended to our elected officials). Therefore, the question is "do our elected officials have influence over semi-local/regional oil companies such as Newcomb Oil?" The answer is no they don't...nor should they. How would local florists, for example, react if the judge or mayor called them up and said "roses in Columbia are $3 per dozen more than Russell Springs"? It just doesn''t work that way. If we, as citizens of our community and of our nation, want to have an impact on gas prices we can do so and it's a very simple thing to do: Stop driving so much and bombard our elected officials who do have this kind of influence (i.e. our President, US Senators and Representatives) with demands that alternative energy sources be found that will reduce our demand on foreign oil.A good friend of mine just returned from a trip to Europe telling me that gas was $16/gallon there. If we as a people do not get serious about forcing our nationally elected leaders to address this situation who knows how high gas may go in the United States. Those people do have some influence in this area...Ann Melton and Pat Bell, for all of the good that they do in our community, do not.
