Ann gets good news on 911 Dispatch Center funding

Dispatcher deficit obligations now met by Adair County EMS and Sheriff's Department; decision on City of Columbia share as center's biggest user, awaited. CJE optimistic City will come through

By Ed Waggener

The Adair Ambulance Board overrode the objections of Board Chairman J.D. Biggs at last night's meeting of the Adair Ambulance Board and voted 2-0 to contribute an amount equal to 22% of the projected deficit on Dispatcher's salaries.

The commitment by the Ambulance Board leaves the Judge with only one more commitment needed, from the City of Columbia, whose police department is the 911 Dispatch Center's biggest user. The Sheriff's Department was already committed to pay its share of salary costs. "I'm optimistic the City will come through," Judge Melton said.

Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton received the word last night after Fiscal Court had met from Adair County EMS Director Terry Akin.

Judge Melton and County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison-Corbin attended the session, which is starts at 6:30amCT, but had to leave before a vote could be taken on the matter.

Members Randy Brown and Sherry Hutchison voted contribute the EMS share, calculated at 22%, which will amount to over $18,000 per year.

An agreement which meets Kentucky statutory requirements will be drawn up by County Attorney Hutchison-Corbin.

Chairman Biggs had initially objected to the funding saying that he had received an Attorney General's opinion that it could not be done legally. But the county attorney told the board that her research indicated that, properly structured, the funding is legal.

Director Akin noted that such support of 911 is done in several nearby counties.

Good news for CJE at end of long day

2008-05-14 - Adair Annex - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Near the end of a long day starting with an upbeat meeting of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce breakfast with Kentucky Economic Development Cabinet Secretary John Hindman and at the close of the Adair County Fiscal Court May meeting, County Judge Ann Melton received good news on the salary funding of the county's Enhanced 911 Dispatch center. The news that the Adair County Ambulance board had overridden Chairman J.D. Biggs' objection and would pay its share of projected share of the salary deficit was personally delivered by EMS Director Terry Akin. The CJE now has two user agencies' support, and lacks only a commitment from the City of Columbia, the biggest user, to complete the budget needs for the center. In the background is Adair County Sixth District Magistrate Joe Rogers.
