LWC will have record graduating class at spring commencement

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs

Lindsey Wilson College will cap off the largest graduating class in its 105-year history when the college holds its spring commencement ceremony on Saturday morning for 163 students and their families.

Lindsey Wilson will confer degrees to a total of 163 students, 151 undergraduate students and 12 graduate students, at the college's 87th commencement ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 10:00amCT on Saturday, May 10, 2008, in Biggers Sports Center.

The commencement address will be delivered by Alice Brown, outgoing president of the Appalachian College Association.

Combined with the 249 graduates from last winter's commencement, the 412-member Class of 2008 is the largest in Lindsey Wilson history. To put that figure in perspective, Lindsey Wilson graduated a total of 135 students in 2003.

"To increase the size of our graduating class by 275 students, or more than 200 percent in just five years, is quite an accomplishment," Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr said. "That increase is good news not just for our graduating students and their families, but it's also good news for Kentucky because these graduates will contribute to our commonwealth's goal of doubling the number of college graduates by 2020."

President Brown has spent the past 25 years leading the 33 colleges and universities of the Appalachian College Association, of which Lindsey Wilson is a member. The association is based in Berea, KY

"Thanks to the work of President Brown and her outstanding staff at the Appalachian College Association, Lindsey Wilson students and faculty have had the opportunity to travel abroad; numerous Lindsey Wilson faculty members have completed their doctorates; many more faculty have taken advantage of professional-development opportunities; and our Katie Murrell Library has been strengthened," Dr. Luckey said.

President Brown, who will receive a doctorate from Lindsey Wilson, was ACA's executive director from 1983 until 2000, when she was named the organization's president.

President Brown holds degrees in English from Appalachian (NC) State University and a doctorate in higher education from the University of Kentucky.

Also receiving a doctorate from Lindsey Wilson will be:

  • R. Vince Fanelli, a retired Kentucky businessman and supporter of The United Methodist Church and Lindsey Wilson

  • The Rev. Paul Fryman, a United Methodist minister who was district superintendent of the Columbia District before being named senior pastor of State Street United Methodist Church of Bowling Green, KY, two years ago

  • The Rev. J. Howard Olds, a Lindsey Wilson trustee and longtime United Methodist minister who is retiring next month as senior pastor of Brentwood (TN) United Methodist Church.
Lindsey Wilson's annual baccalaureate service will be at 7:00pmCT on Friday, May 9, 2008, in Biggers Sports Center. United Methodist minister the Rev. Darrell Lyons, who will become pastor of Leitchfield (KY) United Methodist Church in June, will deliver the baccalaureate message. For more information about Lindsey Wilson's 2008 spring commencement weekend, contact the college at info@lindsey.edu or (270) 384-8400.
