Mi Di hopes to give keys to 9-1-1 building to county this week Building will be ahead of schedule, in budget, and is built to higher than specified standards By Ed Waggener Mi Di Construction company President Mike Newton says that the county should have possession of the new 9-1-1 Dispatch Center on North High Street on Tuesday, May 6, or Wednesday, May 7, 2008. Newton was working on the site on Saturday. The company is completing the project seven weeks ahead of its June 30, 2008, deadline. "We've already told them they can start moving in furniture any time they want to," he said. The building is ready for occupancy as soon as building inspector Carly Fudge does a final walk-through. "Dickie (Dickie Walker, co-owner of Mi-Di) and I are proud of the building," he said. "And we're really proud that we were able to build it with no additional change orders charged to the county," he said. "I think that pleased Ann (Ann Melton, Adair CJE), the way she watches county expenses." There were changes, he said. but none at additional cost to the county. Mi Di will do some landscaping on the front not required by the bid specifications. A much better grade of flooring was installed, and the company changed a barely functional upstairs porch into a solidly, aestheticly pleasing front. The building will have a total of 4,218 square feet of total floor space, divided into three levels. That total does not include 512 square feet of covered porches on the ground and upper level. The building was constructed for approximately $75/s.f. Mr. Newton said he thought the county has a good investment. "If they ever wanted sell it," he said, "You couldn't find nicer downtown office space." And, looking into the bright dispatching center space on the front upper level, he said, "I'd sure like to have this for an office." This story was posted on 2008-05-04 09:31:05
