Saxophone, piano recital at Slider Friday, May 2, 2008

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs

The final Lindsey Wilson College Cultural Affairs event of 2007-08 will be held Friday night.

Saxophonist Ashu will perform in concert with pianist Kuang-Hao Huang at 7:00pmCT on Friday, May 2, 2008, in W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall.

The duo will perform an eclectic mix of mostly modern pieces that includes compositions by Jacques Ibert, Sergei Rachmaninoff and film composer Ennio Morricone.

At age 26, Ashu has established an ability to communicate with audiences through his charismatic and moving performance style. He has defied conventions by winning major competitions traditionally won by pianists and violinists.

Ashu was born and raised in California and began playing the saxophone at age 10. Regularly touring as soloist with orchestras throughout the United States and Europe, his recent invitations include the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon. Earning a reputation for a charismatic stage presence, a Dallas Morning News critic said that Ashu is "just as much fun to watch as he is to listen to."

With the unique ability to captivate general as well as classical audiences, Ashu has shown that the concert saxophone can reach beyond stylistic categorization and to a large diversity of people. He has also shown it can attract younger and new listeners being a relatively fresh instrument to classical audiences.

The saxophone is "really an incredible instrument," he said. "It can play with such emotional intensity, sing like a voice, and effortlessly project in the largest of halls. It's capable of a lot of really beautiful things."For more information about Ashu, go to: www.ashuonline.com.

Saxaphonist Ashu and pianist Kuang-Hao Huang will perform at 7:00pmCT on Friday, May 2, 2008, in Lindsey Wilson College's W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall. For more information about the concert, contact the college at info@lindsey.edu or (270) 384-8350.
