Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo will present a check today, Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at 5:00pmCT, at the Dollhouse Daycare Tutt Street Building in Columbia, KY.

The grant is one of the first ones made to a private organizations, Donna Bryant, owner of Dollhouse Daycare, said this morning in a telephone interview. "I learned about it through our organization Eastern Children's Coalition. The deadline was Thursday after I learned about it on Monday," she said, "but I was able to write a successsful application in that time."

The check she will receive is for $16,771. It's one of 43 grants totaling almost $1 million awarded recently from the Waste Tire Trust Fund managed by the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet's Division of Waste Management.

Lt. Governor Mongiardo, who will be addressing the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce tonight at Lindsey Wilson College, said the use of recycle crumb rubber reflects the importance of environmental stewardship for the children who will visit the playground at Dollhouse Daycare."We have the opportunity to set the example for the next generation to promote the use of recycled materials," Lt. Governor Mongiardo said. "The use of crumb rubber also provides a softer surface than other materials, which may tranlate into fewer playground injuries."The fund was established by the 1998 Kentucky General Assembly to receiv a $1 fee from each sale of a new tire in the state. The money is used to manage the 5 million scrap tires generated in Kentucky each year and to develop markets for recycled tire products.Crumb rubber, made from recycled scrap tires, is used for mulch on playgrounds, for fitness/walking tracks, landscaping and for reduction in soil degradation on athletic fields. Grants this year are goin to projects involving playgrounds, athletic fields, fitness/walking tracks, a gym floor and horse stall matting, a University of Kentucky Research Foundation project at the Kentucky Horse Park.
