In what was one of the most important days in the college's 105-year history, the Lindsey Wilson College Board of Trustees on Thursday unanimously approved a $12 million expansion plan.

The $12 million plan, which is the first phase of a larger expansion for the college, calls for building of a health and wellness center, an addition to the Sumner Campus Ministry Center, an exterior renovation to the Lindsey Wilson Scottsville Campus, and a new baseball-softball complex.

"This is the most remarkable day in my 25 years at Lindsey Wilson College," said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr., who has been at the college since 1983 and has served as its eighth president since 1998.

Lindsey Wilson trustees also unanimously approved the mass grading of a 21-acre piece of property on the Louie B. Nunn Parkway, which will pave the way for the addition of a marching band program and resumption of the football program, which was discontinued after the 1935 season, in fall 2010. The first home football game at Lindsey Wilson is tentatively scheduled for September 4, 2010, almost 75 years after the college's last home football game.

The college's trustees also voted to add a major in recreation, tourism and sports management; a minor in coaching; and an honors program."Few days have been more important in the history of this college than what we decided to do today," Luckey told more than 300 guests who attended the college's annual Founders' Day Dinner, held Thursday night at Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center. "This is a bold initiative for this college to take, but it's clearly the right thing to do because it's an opportunity to expand the Lindsey Wilson mission to students who otherwise would not attend this college and launch this college forward."

The two-story health and wellness center, which will cost about $9 million, will be opened in fall 2009. The 70,000-square-foot building will be located on the corner of Williams and Young streets, the current site of Lindsey Wilson Park baseball field.

The plan calls for the health and wellness center to include three basketball courts, two racquetball courts, a weight room, workout rooms, an indoor walking track and a swimming pool.

"Our college has needed this building for a very long time," said Lindsey Wilson Student Government Association President Drew Sadler, who also serves as a student trustee. "The administration has put together an awesome building for our students."

The $500,000 Lindsey Wilson will invest in a baseball-softball complex on the Louie B. Nunn Parkway will do more than provide those programs with a new home, it also will enhance the student-athletes' academic lives. In addition to a field house, the complex will include lights, which will allow the Lindsey Wilson baseball and softball teams to play home night games.

"Night home games will make it much easier for our student-athletes to juggle their academic responsibilities," Luckey said. "Currently, all of our home baseball games are played in the day and our softball team shares its home field with Adair County Little League, which creates a lot of stress on their class schedules."

Work will begin on the baseball-softball complex before the end of the spring semester so that it is ready for next season's spring games.

The 4,000-square-foot addition to the Sumner Campus Ministry Center could not come at a better time for the college's Christian ministries program.

More than 150 undergraduate students are involved in the program, which has caused it to outgrow the three-year-old Sumner Center. Ground is scheduled to be broken on the building on May 12, 2008, the Monday after spring commencement. The trustees voted to name the addition in honor of Glen and Norma Hodge. The Hodges' son, former LWC trustee Vernon Hodge, and his wife, Pat, gave the $400,000 for the addition.

The $200,000 improvements to the exterior of the Lindsey Wilson Scottsville Campus will make the building a more attractive asset to the Scottsville Square. The $200,000 was a gift from the Turner family of Scottsville.

"Lindsey Wilson enjoys such a wonderful relationship with the citizens of Allen County-Scottsville," Luckey said. "This renovation to the Scottsville Campus' exterior will make it a much more attractive part of their downtown square."

Although marching band and football are more than two years away, Luckey said that both of those programs will have "a dramatic effect on this college." The two programs will allow the college to increase its residential student population, which currently stands at about 700. It also will strengthen the college's music program, as well as bolster its relations with Columbia-Adair County by offering a half-dozen home football games each fall.

"This is a giant step for Lindsey Wilson College," said Lindsey Wilson trustee Truett Beighle of Carrollton, KY. "I've been looking forward to having a football team and marching band for a long time, and I can't wait to see the first home game."

The $12 million expansion plan was made possible, Luckey said, because the college invested first in its academic programs. Over the last 10 years, Lindsey Wilson's full-time faculty has expanded by 77 percent, and the number of terminally degreed faculty has increased by more than 160 percent. Also since 1998, the college has added eight majors.

"The truth of the matter is, great colleges don't rest, they don't even pause," Luckey told the Founders' Day Dinner guests. "So take a deep breath and hang on so that we can continue to change students' lives.

And remember that the best is yet to come."

Also on Thursday, the college held its annual Honors Day Convocation in Biggers Sports Center where more than two dozen Lindsey Wilson students and faculty were honored.

Nicole Furnish, an education freshman from Bardstown, KY, received the Alma Jones Wade Scholarship; and the group Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success was named Student Group of the Year by the Lindsey Wilson Student Government Association.

The top faculty honors went to Associate Professor of Accounting Gary Gibson, who was named Adviser of the Year.

Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice Daniel III Phillips received the Exemplary Teaching Award from the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry of The United Methodist Church

Assistant Professor of History Melinda Senters was named Teacher of the Year for the second consecutive school year by the Lindsey Wilson Student Government Association.
