Why is the N in AMANDAVILLE italicized?

2008-04-19 - Amandaville, Cumberland CO., KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
THERE MAY BE A SIMPLE EXPLANATION, but can anyone send the answer to the question above? The sign is main one on the front of one of the most beautiful churches in Kentucky, the Amandaville Christian Church on Scenic KY Hwy 704, south of Adair County in Cumberland.
N mystery solved by Superintendent Darrell Treece
Adair County Supt. Darrell Treece has a very most interesting suggestion on the italicized letter "N" in the Amandaville Christian Church sign. He wrote, "If you look at the degree of slant in the M, the A and the V in AMANDAVILLE,they all appear to be the same as the N. The N in CHRISTIAN is different.Evidently that was just the way the letters were made."

At first, I couldn't get the meaning of Superintendent Treece's insight, but it's readily aparent if one considers that the signmaker may had more Roman "M's" and no Roman "A's" or "Ns," and that the signmaker may have cut the Roman M's to make the Roman A's and italicized N. The N in Christian is Roman form, and would not have been a jury rigged letter. -EW

    Iced Tea

    2008-04-19 - Photo By Pen.
This photo of iced tea by Pen brings to mind an essay by Bailey White on public radio which made the memory of the first iced tea of the year seem like the most delightful drink in the world. Or of occasions, such a a trip through Tryon, NC, and a dinner on a front porch restaurant when redbuds were in bloom. Clicking Read More accesses the "Today, Sunday, April 20, 2008" feature

Flowers: Do you know what these blossoms on Bull Run RD are?

2008-04-19 - District 7, Adair County, KY - Photo Armitage photo.
CONSIDERED ONE OF THE SWEETEST SMELLING BLOSSOMS in the world these flowers are found on one of the rare plants that bloom and bear fruit at the same time. Songs have been written about them, honey and perfume made from their nectar. Brides consider them the perfect wedding flower. They're orange blossoms and they're blooming at Tucker's Station Farms. The 8 foot Valencia Orange tree is a prize possession of Barbara Armitage. Two years ago, she brought this and several other citrus trees with her from Florida, where she grew. "Every spring they fill my house with their wonderful scent and then once again in the fall they bloom making my porch smell like my childhood," she said.Clicking Read More accesses the "Today, Sunday, April 20, 2008" feature

    Smith's Chapel church of Christ
This is an old church of christ out in Gadberry, Ky. It was taken about 1925. This is the Smith's chapel church of Christ. The building was located in Gadberry, Kentucky south of Columbia on Highway 704. The building burned a few years ago under suspicious circumstances, but before it did the pulpit was removed for restoration. The little girl in the front row, third from the left is Dorothy Darnell Gadberry. Dorothy was born in 1918 and based on that it is estimated the year was around 1925. Before Dorothy passed away in 2001, she went through and named the people in the photo. At age 83 she knew everyone with few exceptions.

Great Bridge-off of 2008: Haydon Bridge vs. Jones-Bourland

2008-04-20 - Russell Creek, Adair County, Ky - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Yesterday afternoon, Saturday, April 19, 2008,all the beams were in place across Adair County's longest bridge, at the northern terminus of the Columbia Western Bypass over mighty Russell Creek near KY 55 N. It was put into place in a hurry. Looking west, the road curves gently south before it will cross Pelham Branch Road. Crews are going through major cuts near Murray Lane and just east of Adair County Elementary School, the last major cuts to be made. Blacktopping production for the road is expected on April 28, 2008 or shortly after. The betting issue, now, is which builder, Haydon Bridge of Springfield, building the Longest Bridge, or Jones-Bourland Construction Co. of Paintsville, building the Road Eighty bridge, will win this unofficial bridge-off. Whose bridge will be ready first: Haydon's Longest Bridge, or Jones-Bourland's Road Eighty one? The last unofficial bridge building competition was won by Joe Lynn Barbee, when he built the incline Bridge to Gobbler's Knob over fierce Bull Run Creek and some other company was building the Green Hills Bridge over Russell Creek. Despite the enormity of the job faced by JLB, having to confront Bull Run Creek and it's wrath of God torrents, Ol' Joe won that one, by all accounts. Grandsons: Wanta buy a ticket on a Chevy Taco?

2008-04-20 - Midway, Russell Co., KY - Photo By Pen.
IT WAS FOR A GOOD CAUSE, his soccer team, the one on the right assured his Granddad, who bought when asked. May not be good odds, but for $5, and a chance to drive a new Chevy Taco around town, that's a deal! The tickets are just $5 each, if anyone wants to help a good cause. The fellow on the left is hard to beat in a sports match. On each hole, he reported "I got a two," and said he won. It is even tougher beating him at badminton. On the first three plays, he announced the scores as 29-2, then 55-3, then 99-4. He had the 99, he said, and said, of course, "I won."
