COLUMBIA, Ky. A memorial service for the late L. Rayburn Daugherty will be held at 2:00pmCT on Sunday, April 26, 2008, in Lindsey Wilson College's John B. Begley Chapel.

Daugherty died on February 3, 2008 at The Villages Hospice House in The Villages, FL. He was born in Monticello, KY, but was raised in Columbia, where his father was the Standard Oil Distributor for Adair County.

Daugherty was a member of the legendary 1953-54 and '54-55 Adair County High School basketball teams that went to the Kentucky high school state basketball tournament. The '54-55 team, which lost in the finals to Hazard, is considered to be one of Kentucky's all-time great high school basketball teams.

Following graduation from Adair County, Daugherty attended Lindsey Wilson, where he played basketball for the legendary coach Doug Hines. After graduating from Lindsey Wilson, Daugherty earned a bachelor's degree from Lincoln Memorial (TN) College and then a master's degree from Indiana University.

Daugherty later returned to Adair County High School to serve as assistant boys' basketball coach under Hall of Fame coach John Burr. In 1965, Daugherty accepted a teaching and coaching job at West Palm Beach (Fla.) Community College. He retired in 1995.

Daugherty is survived by his wife, June Waters Daugherty, of The Villages; and a son, Larry Daugherty of West Palm Beach.

The memorial service will be an opportunity for Daugherty's friends and teammates from the area to remember him and celebrate his life.

For more information about the service, contact Lindsey Wilson at info@lindsey.edu or (270) 384-8400.
