BAKERY sign over Moore's Pool Room explained

Old newspaper item explains its origin

After posting the photo captioned The story behind the BAKERY sign? on April 5, 2008, asking for information on the "BAKERY" sign in brick over the present day Moore's Pool Room on the North Walk off the Square in Columbia, a letter came in the U.S. mail from clandestine agent. The letter started with this notation, "The Columbian Bakery opened six days after the Columbian Theatre," and this item from the Adair County News, in the February 26, 1947 edition:

Columbia Bakery opens for business

The Columbia Bakery, owned and operated by L.J. and L.C. Willis, opened today in a new building located next door to the Columbian Theatre on the Public Square.

The owners, L.J. Willis, veteran of World War II, and L.C. Willis, who recently returned here rom Detroit, Mich., where he had been employed for a number of years, started construction on their building last November and it is complete in every detail.

All equipment is of the latest type and R.C. (Bob) Vance, formerly with the Lebanon Home Bakery, and known to be one of the best bakers in Kentucky, is in charge of the bakeroom.

They specialize in everything an up-to-date bakery could have to offer and accept special orders for all kinds of fancy cakes.
Our thanks to the clandestine agent. The letter contained a postmark, but no other information indicating who the mysterious agent is, though there is probably only one mind in the universe, one history genius alone, capable of knowing the need, doing the research, and sending the information. We welcome any other comment on the Columbia Bakery, from identified sources or clandestine ones, equally. One question comes to mind. This announcement says nothing about a doughnut maker. Didn't a doughnut maker come from Glasgow with some pretty fancy doughnut equipment and operate there for awhile? Also, our thanks to Mitch McKinley for reminding CM of the existence of the old sign -EW
