On December 18, 2005 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY, Cody Dorman was born to Kelly and Leslie Dorman. Cody spent the first 12 days of his life and first Christmas in the intensive care unit. When Cody went home, he was required to stay on oxygen and had difficulty eating.

Two blood tests diagnosed Cody with Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome or WHS.

WHS is a non-preventable genetic birth defect caused by a partial deletion of the fourth chromosome. 1 in 50,000 babies around the world regardless of race or geographic location will be born with WHS and 34% of those babies will not live past their second birthday.

Cody can melt your heart in a second with his big blue eyes. He has a special look that he gives Kelly and Leslie to show his love for them. It truly is amazing. Kelly and Leslie live their lives minute by minute, never knowing what will happen next to their little Cody.

Even though this darling little boy has been through more surgeries, hospitalizations and doctor visits than most people will experience in a lifetime, he still remains a happy little boy who hardly ever complains or cries.

It isn't easy having to plan every minute of every day revolving around uncontrollable issues. In the last 28 months little Cody has endured a series of medical procedures that would be unbearable for most people, especially adults:
  • Heart catheterization Surgery5 weeks old
  • Open heart surgery5 weeks old
  • Atrial Septal Defect requiring surgery when older
  • Developmentally delayedequivalent to a 4 or 6 month old
  • Receives nutritional requirements via a feeding tube and pump
  • Oxygen required for sleeping as well as a pulse/oxygen monitor
  • Seizures (occasionally has to be taken to the ER by ambulance)
  • testing for visual problems which may require surgery
  • Severe neurological problems resulting in lack of good arm and leg controland just recently started gaining good head control. Cody's neurological problems can be compared to MS due to his under developed myelin.
  • Fusing of his first vertebra to his skull which is not completely formed. May require surgery in the future.
  • Requires the use of specialized equipment such as medical supplies, wheel chair, carseat, chairs at home and toys.
  • Currently taking a minimum of 18 medications daily, sometimes more
  • Numerous Doctor's appointments through out the month at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Lexington
  • Therapy 4 days a week followed by Developmental Interventionist as well as Occupational, Physical and Speech
  • Under the care of Hospice
  • January 2007 Exploratory surgery due to feeding and respiratory issues
  • July 2007 - Surgery to place a feeding tube in his stomach
  • January 2008 8 day hospitalization for viral infection
  • February 2008 Emergency surgery to remove small bowel obstruction and appendectomy. Due to his weakened state, Cody caught a respiratory virus after surgery. He spent 8 days in the hospital, 4 of which were in ICU
  • Surgery April 4, 2008 for urological problems
  • He has been hospitalized many times due to viral and bacterial infections, seizures, and surgery. Cody has a very weak immune system and care must be taken when he goes out in public.
Even though Kelly and Leslie live in Georgetown, their family ties are in Adair County. Kelly is the son of Fred and Pat Dorman, and Leslie is the daughter of Lester and Julita Spoon.

Although Kelly has a good job at Toyota in Georgetown and good medical health insurance, many of the expenses incurred over the past two years plus have not been covered. Out of pocket expenses and missed days at work have put a burden on Kelly and Leslie.

Many friends and family members have stepped forward to help with these expenses in various ways.

A series of activities are already planned including a Benefit Auction and Yard Sale, May 10, at the Church of the Nazarene Wheet Fellowship Hall.

Pro-bass club members are sponsoring a charity Bass Fishing Tournament May 31 at Conley Bottom Boat Ramp on Lake Cumberland. This is an open tournament and anyone interested in entering should contact Theresa Bethel at 270-634-0924 or inquire at area marinas and bait shops.

Contributions can be made directly to the family through First and Farmers National Bank with checks made out to "Casting for Cody."

Kelly and Leslie have not asked for this help. It is the results of the Adair County Community's attitude toward helping others. Watch for other special fund raising activities for Cody and exercise the Adair County "Spirit of Giving."
