"Magic Moments" and "Sweet Violet," songs of the 50's, set the theme for the weekend of January 5 & 6, 2008, as Russell & Sue Lee celebrated their 50th anniversary not once but twice due to the 5th being a surprise 50th reception for them.

Sue mentioned that she didn't know that many friends and family could keep their mouth shut that tight and not mess up the surprise event.

Celebration January 5, 2008 at Hampton Inn

The January 5, 2008 event was held from 2- 4pm, at Hampton Inn in Somerset, KY.

Kimiko Collins(granddaughter) and her fiance Casey Rexroat took Russell & Sue out to eat at King Buffet for lunch. They just happened to be chauffeuring them around so when Casey pulled into the Hampton parking lot it was just assumed they had an errand to make.

That was where Russell & Sue received their own invitation to their 50th reception. One would look at it and then pass it over to the other one trying to figure it out. You see, on the 6th the next day they were planning to renew their wedding vows at the church . Sue was trying to figure out if for some reason and in some way if Debra (Lee) Collins and Sue's 2 sisters, Gayle Garrison & Emma Revis, had managed to change the reception on the 6th to the 5th.

Finally Debra came out and brought them in- when they opened the door to the meeting room where the reception was held they were speechless. Russell was heard saying he didn't know how we managed to get so many friends in that one room.

Gayle and Amy Mitchum(niece) served the strawberry punch and kept it going. Emma Revis served the wonderful white 3 tiered cake that Barbara Overstreet had made for the big event. Kimiko Collins had put together a slide show of pictures that told their story to the tune of 'sweet violets' & 'magic moments' .

Debra was the organizer that kept everything flowing- she even managed to get Russell & Sue to dance to 'magic moments' and share that dance with their friends and family from all around the surrounding area. Russell even did a little jig for Sue to show her he could still cut the mustard!

Some of the friends and family from Columbia were Alice and Phillip Hadley, LC & Geneva Bradshaw, Phyllis Caldwell and Louvern Lee. Nieces and Nephews were well represented and the original wedding party that was at the initial event finally got their picture taken- Joyce and Alvin Hitch, Russell Springs, Gayle Garrison from Columbia. Approximately 37 people, total, registered Donations in lieu of gifts were requested for the following groups:
  • Shriners. Son Ricky Lee is a member of the Shrines and member of a clown unit.
  • Gideon's. Russell & Sue have always support them.
  • And Liberty Baptist Church missions. Russell has gone on several mission trips w/ the church out west an other areas as well
Vows renewed at Liberty Baptist Church

January 6, 2008 at Liberty Baptist Church Fellowship Hall 7pm, church potluck kicked it off then Bro Ulanda Price started the music slide show for all gathered there.

He then introduced the evening activities by telling the story about how Sue had called him and told him what she wanted to do for the 50th anniversary just small and local and she wanted to renew their vows.

Bro Ulanda Price assisted her in getting this put together and then her daughter, Debra called all in panic mode and wanted to know what they must do now!

With invitations already in the mail it was decided to go ahead since everything was already in motion by that time it came to light. Russell had told Bro Price on Saturday, January 5th that to go ahead and be thinking of what they could do about renewing of those vows but to keep it short.

Bro Price conducted a 'continuation of their commitment vows.' He stated that their love and faithfulness had already been proven. He had them to repeat their vows to each other.

Liberty Baptist singers sung some love songs that talked about their love for each other. Russell gave a short testimony, telling how great God is that 40 years ago the doctors had came out and told him they didn't think Sue would live though the night.

Who would have ever thought that they would be there that night celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary after that announcement. Isn't God great!

The children thanked church members for their continued support of Russell & Sue Lee and the event was inspiring to those who were their to see such love and devotion to each other, family and friends. Linda Lou Lee, Columbia native, and niece Misty Lee served the pineapple punch and the ladies in the church assisted Debra and Russell serving of the cake, made by ' Take the Cake.' It was a three tier cake with a white layer on top, fudge layer in the middle and carrot cake on the bottom tier and cream cheese icing.

Kimiko Collins attempted to get everyone registered but 100 plus was an approx estimated number since all didn't get registered.

The vening wrapped up with Russell getting to ride the 'Rail' and with friends like that to lean on who could ask for more!

This weekend was a weekend filled to the brim with 'Magic Moments.'
