ACHS Senior Seth Coomer meets Hillary at Madisonville Outstanding student is bound for UK on Presidential scholarship; gets up close and personal view of political process Photos accompany this article Local Adair County High School senior, Seth Coomer, got an up close and personal view of the political process Saturday, March 29, 2008, in Madisonville, Kentucky. Seth's aunt, Marian (Helm) Smith (Adair County High School Alum), secured tickets for Seth to attend the annual Ruby Laffoon Dinner Democratic Fundraiser in Madisonville, Kentucky. The Ruby Laffoon Dinner, named in honor of Hopkins County native and former Governor Ruby Laffoon, extended an invitation to the Democratic Presidential nominee candidates and Hillary Clinton accepted the invitation. Just as soon as the appearance was confirmed, Seth's aunt called him with the news that he was invited to attend the dinner and event with her. According to Marian, attending the dinner and political rally was not about party affiliation but, an opportunity for a student to see history in the making. Seth will attend UK on Presidential Scholarship Seth, will graduate from Adair County High School this spring with honors and plans to attend the University of Kentucky on a Presidential Scholarship as a political science and history major. Seth also participated this past summer in the Governor's Scholars Program at Bellarmine University where his aunt, Marian was a faculty member. According to Marian, Saturday night's event was a wonderful opportunity for Seth to see the political process from the grass roots and local candidates all the way to the Governor and Presidential nominee. Candidates for local offices and state offices were recognized and allowed to speak to issues important in their platforms. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear was the keynote speaker. Senator Hillary Clinton spoke and hit on national issues and those specific to the state. Kentucky's primary on May 20th will likely be important in securing the nominee. 2008 first year Seth will have opportunity to vote According to Marian, this is the first time Seth will have the opportunity to vote. "I do not care who he votes for, but this gift and right is so important to exercise as an American citizen. Seth's interest and keen insight in the political process encourages me and gives me great hope. "He is a very bright young man who loves learning, being informed and being engaged. He is open minded and very articulate. It was an honor for me to escort him to this event, even if I am his 'crazy aunt'. "It was an event neither of us will ever forget."Seth was seated just to the right of the stage and secured photos and an autograph from the Senator," she said.
