Acclaimed pianist Calvin Taylor at Slider Fri., March 28, 2008 EVENTS By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs Acclaimed pianist Calvin Taylor returns to Lindsey Wilson College on Friday night for a special recital. Taylor will perform "The Art and Soul of the Piano" at 7:00pmCT on Friday, March 28, 2008, in W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall. His recital , which is part of the Lindsey Wilson Cultural Affairs Series, is free and open to the public. Taylor's performance is made possible by a gift from the Lawrence A. Appley Foundation. As arranger and composer, Taylor's music has been heard and enjoyed by millions. He has presented thousands of concerts in U.S. churches. He has also toured throughout the world, playing in North and South America, Europe and the Far East. He has recorded several compact discs, and he is also the author of several books. Among Taylor's musical composition are "Five Spirituals for Organ" and "Spiritual Suite for Organ." As part of the celebration of 50 years of African American presence at the University of Kentucky, Taylor was commissioned to write "Choral Fantasia on Deep River." A native of Los Angeles, Taylor is a composer, pianist and organist who has been performing since he was a young child. By age 14, he served as organist in several Southern California churches and was a member of the trumpet section of the Los Angeles Junior Philharmonic and Southwest Youth Symphony. Taylor made history at Oberlin (Ohio) Conservatory in 1970 when he became the first organist in the school's 150-year history to improvise a graduate concert encore. After studying organ at the University of Michigan, where he earned a master's degree, Taylor became active as a studio arranger and studied composition and orchestration at the University of California at Los Angeles and The Dick Grove School of Music where he learned from popular-music composers Henry Mancini, Nelson Riddle, David Raksin, Dick Grove and Peter Matz. Pianist Calvin Taylor will perform "The Art and Soul of the Piano" at 7:00pmCT on Friday at Lindsey Wilson College's W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall.
