Obituary: Max Stewart Fones, 85, dies in Franklin, KY

Mr. Fones was a highly respected citizen of Columbia, KY, prior to moving to Franklin, KY, and was a member of the Columbia Baptist Church here. He is remembered for his love of tennis and his promotion of the game in Adair County. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific in World War II and will be accorded military honors by the Simpson County

OBITUARIES

Max Stewart Fones, 85, Franklin, KY, a former resident of Columbia, KY, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at his home.

The funeral service is Friday, March 21, 2008, at 11:00am, CT, at the First Baptist Church in Franklin, KY. Visitation will be from 4:00pm until 8:00pmCT, Thursday, March 20, and Friday morning at Booker-Gilbert Funeral Home in Franklin, KY.



A native of Yorkville, TN, he was the son of the late William Henry and Elvy Lee Stewart Fones. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Virginia Lee Fones.He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Marjorie Marie Fones, and the following:
  • One daughter: Mary Ellen Fones and her husband Roger, Lexington, KY

  • Three sons: William Michael Fones and his wife Karen Chelf, Norris, TN, formerly of Columbia, KY; John Mark Fones and his wife Natalie of Bowling Green, KY; and Matthew Hudson Fones and his wife Ann-Taylor, Nashville, TN

  • And seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren
Mr. Fones was a faithful member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Franklin. One of his great joys was teaching the Men's Sunday School class at First Baptist, which he did for over 50 years. He was a member of the Reflections Choir. He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on several ships including the New Mexico.

His years in Columbia

He came to Columbia as a regional marketing representative for the Ralston-Purina Company. During the Fones' time in Columbia, he and his wife and very popular family lived on Maple Street in a house once owned by Rev. J.P. and Mary Garnett Scruggs, and later by Pat and Martha Bell, and still later by Hunter and Joyce Durham and which is now a part of Lindsey Wilson College campus. Many people in this community will remember Max Fones for his athleticism, and his love of tennis. The Fones' were congregants at Columbia Baptist Church, where he was also a member of the choir.

Burial will be in Franklin

Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery with military honors by the Simpson County Honor Guard.
