Obituary: Homer Ballenger, 83, oil, water driller over 40 years

Mr. Ballard was a respected water and oil well driller and was a force in the development of the oil fields in South Central Kentucky for over 40 years. He was a member of the Melson Ridge Separate Baptist Church and served on the church's board of deacons.

Homer Ballenger, 83, a resident of Summit Manor Health & Rehab Center in Columbia, KY, formerly of the Cundiff Community, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008, at 3:40amCT at Westlake Regional Hospital in Columbia, KY, after several days illness.

The funeral service will be Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at 1:00pmCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Willard Bryant the officiating clergy.



He was born February 2, 1925, the son of the late LaRue and Bessie Kimbler Ballenger of Russell County, KY.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita McKinney Ballenger, on June 23, 1976. He later married Edna Dykes Cape Ballenger of Columbia, KY, who survives.

He is further survived by the following:
  • One son: Steven Ballenger, Jamestown, KY

  • One step son: Darrell Cape and wife Lisa, Columbia, KY

  • One sister: Jerelene Cummings, Jamestown, KY

  • One step grandson: Derek Cape, Columbia, KY

  • And several nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by one sister, Nadine Powell; two infant brothers, Franzel Ballenger and Jasper Ballenger; and by one step son, Doyle Cape (August 23, 2005).

Mr. Ballenger was a water and oil well driller for over 40 years in South Central Kentucky. He was a member of the Melson Ridge Separate Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.

Interment will be in Hadley Cemetery in Russell County, KY.

The family requests visiting after 4:00pmCT, Monday, March 17, 2008, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY.
