Alex Bailey earns early acceptance to UK College of Pharmacy Adair County High School graduate is the son of Rick and Sharon Bailey of Columbia, KY. He has near perfect GPA and is four-year Begley Scholar With one photo By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs For most graduating college seniors, the spring semester is a time of stress and anxiety. Whether it is worrying about landing their first job or being accepted into professional or graduate school, most seniors have plenty to fret about. But for Adair County native and Lindsey Wilson College senior Alex Bailey, this semester is an opportunity for him to savor his final semester of undergraduate life. Last fall, Bailey was one of a handful of U.S. college students who received early acceptance into the University of Kentuckys College of Pharmacy. Bailey will begin UKs doctoral program in pharmacy next fall at UK. It is considered to be among the top pharmacy programs in the country. Its a good feeling to know that things are taken care of, and I know what I will be doing next fall, said Bailey, the son of Rick and Sharon Bailey of Columbia and the husband of the former Joie Gosser. Bailey is one of more than three dozen Lindsey Wilson students who have been admitted to pharmacy schools in the region. In addition to UK, Lindsey Wilson students have been accepted to pharmacy schools at Butler (IN) University, the University of Cincinnati, Mercer (GA) University, Samford (AL) University and Sullivan (KY) University. Bailey said he felt prepared for UKs high admission standards because of the experience hes had as a biology major at Lindsey Wilson. The quality of teaching is very good at Lindsey Wilson, and the small class sizes have made it easier to adjust to college-level work, said Bailey, who is a 2004 graduate of Adair County High School. The one-on-one teaching and hands-on experience we receive at Lindsey Wilson are also very helpful. Bailey, who has a near-perfect 4.0 grade point average, has been named to the Deans or Presidents list every semester at Lindsey Wilson. Hes also been a four-year member of the colleges Begley Scholars Program. Wed like to take a lot of credit for his success, but this guy is so good that he would have gotten in without our help, joked LWC Associate Professor of ChemistryRobert Shuffett. After he earns his doctorate, Bailey said he hopes to return to the region and practice pharmacy. But Prof. Shuffett said he wouldnt be surprised if Bailey wound up doing something else. Hes so accomplished and so gifted that he could become a researcher, Shuffett said. Hes been one of the top students to go through our program. This story was posted on 2008-03-04 06:34:43
