Read Adair County draws huge crowd: over 800

By Ellen Zornes

One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fishI do not like them, Sam I AmI do not like green eggs and hamEvery Who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot

Yes, these are just a few of the words that one of America's best loved authors, Dr. Seuss has given us. Last evening, Monday, March 3, 2008 approximately 800 'kids' of all ages, children through adults, joined in the 7th Annual Read Adair County that was held at Adair County Elementary School as part of Read Across America to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

This year's community, family read-in for children aged birth through 8th grade and their parents, guardians and grandparents celebrated in style with lots of storybook characters reading books and strolling around the school, kids playing bingo for books, having their faces painted and eating pizza.

Each child received a goody bag from the Cat in the Hat that included a book and other cool stuff; all in all a fun celebration. This was all followed by the Parade of Storybook characters led by none other than the Cat in the Hat and culminated with the top Accelerated Readers in each school being awarded a medal for outstanding reading.

We wish to thank all who attended this year's event and a special thanks to Lindsey Wilson College Division of Education for their participation in everything from dressing as storybook characters to serving pizza and drinks; Lindsey Wilson College Upward Bound students and Russell Heights Baptist Church Youth Group for preparing our goody bags.

The following for their donations and contributions: Lake Cumberland District Head Start, IGA, Wendy's, Domino's Pizza, Hot Prints, Graphic Concepts and Judy Stephen's Costumes. Our media outlets of Columbia Magazine, The Adair Progress, The Community Voice, WAIN Radio Station, WHVE Radio Station, and to the many individuals and businesses who made monetary donations (a list will be provided soon).

We are so thankful to be part of a school community and a community at large, where so many wonderful things are happening. We appreciate the opportunity to serve our children and their families.

Thank you!
