PRIDE honors Columbia's Barbara Armitage

By Karen Engle

Eastern Kentucky PRIDE has named Barbara Armitage as the PRIDE Volunteer of the Month for March 2008. The Columbia resident was honored for her caring for the environment as a volunteer at the Adair County Recycling Center and Adair County Garden Club.

"Barbara has played a major role in recruiting new people for our recycling program," said Adair County Judge/Executive Ann Melton. Melton and A.L. Sinclair, the county's Solid Waste and PRIDE Coordinator, nominated Armitage for the PRIDE award.

Armitage visits schools with county government employees who teach students about recycling. To reach the entire community, she speaks about recycling on local radio. Last fall, she volunteered to help at the recycling center when residents were dropping off leaves.

"I want to thank Barbara Armitage for serving her community and encouraging others to do their part," said PRIDE President and Chief Executive Officer Karen Engle. "She is making sure people realize that recycling is such a simple way that we all can be good stewards of our natural resources. Adair County provides a great service by operating a recycling center that makes it easy for citizens to do the right thing with their aluminum cans, paper and other recyclable items."

The Adair County Recycling Center is located off North 55 at 62 Service Road. It is open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Staff are available to assist with drop offs. The county will arrange to pick up recyclables at businesses. For more information about recycling, call Judge Melton's office at 384-4703.

Armitage organized Adair County's first Garden Club, which now has about 40 members. Engle explained that such a club not only provides a fun activity for its members, but it also can serve as a volunteer group for local environmental projects. She said, "Across our region, garden clubs often take the lead in keeping high-traffic areas clean and attractive, making their community more welcoming to visitors."

The PRIDE Volunteer of the Month program recognizes hard work and dedication to the PRIDE initiative. With corporate sponsorship from TECO Coal, WYMT-TV airs commercials about each PRIDE Volunteer of the Month. The 12 Volunteers of the Month are considered for PRIDE's annual Tony Turner Volunteer of the Year Award.

"Volunteers are the backbone of PRIDE," said Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-5), PRIDE co-founder. "We wouldn't be where we are without our volunteers. More than 230,000 volunteers have helped with PRIDE cleanup and education projects. We want to thank TECO Coal for helping PRIDE give these generous people the recognition they deserve."

PRIDE links citizens with the resources of local, state and federal agencies to clean up the region's waterways, end illegal trash dumps and promote environmental education and awareness. PRIDE is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. For more information on becoming a PRIDE volunteer, call the PRIDE office, toll free, at 888-577-4339 or visit www.kypride.org. Locally, please call Adair County PRIDE Co-Coordinators A.L. Sinclair and (270) Lisa Lee at 384-4703 or Carolyn Edwards, the Columbia PRIDE Coordinator, at (270) 384-2501.
