Obituary: Dr. Kermit E. Flener, Sr., 82, former CUMC pastor

OBITUARIES

Dr. Flener was a graduate of Lindsey Wilson College and was a member of the LWC Board of Trustees. He served as pastor of Columbia United Methodist Church when the new sanctuary was built. He was a veteran of World War II. Services will be in Louisville, KY, and in his native Morgantown, KY, with burial to follow there.

Former Columbia United Methodist Church pastor Rev. Dr. Kermit E. Flener Sr., 82, died Saturday, February 23, 2008.



He was a member of the 1944 graduating class of Morgantown, KY High School. He served in the Army Air Corps in WWII as a B-17 Flying Fortress top turret engineer-gunner.

Dr. Flener earned an AA degree from Lindsey Wilson College, a BA degree from Evansville University, and a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University. In 1975 he was awarded an Honorary degree as Doctor of Divinity from Union College, Barbourville, KY.

He served student pastorates in Hancock County and North Cadiz Circuit. After graduating from seminary he served Vine Grove, Columbia United Methodist Church, Hopkinsville First, Chapel Hill in Henderson, Campbellsville District Superintendent, and the following churches in the Louisville area: Bethany, Audubon Park, and St. Matthews United Methodist Church.

He retired from St. Matthews after serving 41 years as a senior pastor. He then became Visitation Pastor at Christ Church United Methodist for 16 years after his retirement.

While at Vine Grove and Columbia United Methodist, new church buildings were built. While at St. Matthews, a new Educational plant and Chapel were built.

During his years in the pastoral ministry, he served on numerous boards and agencies of the Kentucky and Louisville Conferences and the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church, including Chairman of the Conference Board of Ministry, Chairman and Dean of KY UM Pastor's School and President of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Minister's Conference.

He served on the Conference Board of Pensions, was a member of the Board of Trustees of Wesley Manor, Lindsey College and KY Wesleyan College. He was a delegate to the World Methodist Conference in Dublin, Ireland. Kermit was active in civic and community affairs in the various locations where he served. He was a 57 year Mason.

Kermit and Ruth were instrumental in starting the KY Methodist Camping group and were active in the Airstream Camping Unit, serving as Chaplain in both organizations. He was Chaplain on the local, regional and international level for the Airstream group.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gobel and Loletuth Flener, and a brother, Lonus Flener.

He is survived by his wife, V. Ruth Flener, and the following:
  • Two sons: Kermit (Ed) Flener, Jr. (Charlotte); Overland Park, KS. and Rev. Stephen Ray Flener (Oma) of Hartford, KY

  • Five grandchildren: Charity, Loletuth, and Erin Flener , Matthew (Carrie) Flener, and Rebecca (Becky) Heimann (Ben); as well as, two great-grandchildren, Grace Flener and Emmaline Heimann.

  • One sister, Mary Lou Flener (Hobart, Jr.)

  • A sister-in-law: Jean Flener

  • And various nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 3-8pmET Thursday, February 28, 2008, and Noon-4pmET Friday, February 29, 2008 at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville, KY.

A Service of Celebration will be held at 6:00pmET Friday, February 29, 2008, at Christ Church United Methodist, 4614 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, KY.

Saturday, March 1 there will be visitation from 10:00am to 12:00pmCT followed by a second Celebration Service at 12:00pmCT at Smith Funeral Home, Morgantown, KY. Burial will be in Hill Haven Memorial Gardens in Morgantown, KY.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Prepare the Way Building Fund, 4614 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, KY 40207; Lindsey Wilson College Scholarship Fund, Lindsey Wilson College, 210 Lindsey Wilson St., Columbia, KY 42728; or Wesley Manor Retirement Community Benevolent Fund, 5012 E.
