Casey student learns about basketball as LWC student assistant By Duane Bonifer, LWC Public Affairs Director Derek Murphy has been one of the best seats at Lindsey Wilson College women's basketball games. Murphy, a Lindsey Wilson freshman, is a student assistant this season for the Blue Raiders. In addition to having a courtside seat for every game, Murphy assists LWC coach John B. Wethington on everything from team laundry to helping with individual workouts. He travels with the team, and he's also at all of the team's practices in Biggers Sports Center, which begin at 6:00amCT every weekday. "I just do anything I can do to help the team," Murphy said. "I always want to contribute anything I can." Wethington says that Murphy is an invaluable asset to the Blue Raiders, and he's one of the reasons Lindsey Wilson is currently tied for first place in the Mid-South Conference of the NAIA. "He is one of the critical people behind the scenes for us," said Wethington, who is also a Casey County native. "A lot of people show up and watch the 40 minutes of basketball and don't realize the amount of work that goes into it from people like Derek." Wethington has known Murphy since the student was an infant. "It kind of makes me feel old (to have him as a student assistant) because I remember when Derek was born," Wethington said. In fact, Wethington's relationship with Murphy's family pre-dates the student assistant's birth. Murphy's father, Lee, often took a young Wethington to area basketball games including the famous 1983 postseason game between the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville, played in Knoxville, Tenn."He gave me a lot of opportunities that I normally wouldn't have had growing up Clementsville in Casey County," Wethington said. And now Wethington is returning the favor to Murphy's son."There's a lot about the game I didn't realize before" becoming a student assistant," Murphy said. "I used to just watch the game, now I understand a lot more of what's going on." A 2007 Casey County High School graduate, Murphy is also a standout member of the Lindsey Wilson men's golf team. He's been an avid golfer since he was about 6 years. "I started as soon as I could get out on a golf course," he said. The spring golf season doesn't get under way for several weeks, but Murphy said the Blue Raiders' 2008 prospects appear to be strong."We don't have any seniors on team, and we look to have a good run this spring," he said. Although graduation is more than three years away, Murphy said he has already started to think about possible career paths after Lindsey Wilson."I've thought about going into to education, (and basketball) might be a possibility in the long run," he said.
