Tony Harvey says numbers could have been as much as 3 times higher in warmer weather. He's suggesting serious watchers in the county form a group.

By Tony Harvey

I had almost forgotten all about the backyard count until my wife reminded me of it. As most of you know that yesterday was milder than most. That should help in spotting more species than one would normally be able to see.

Within a little over 3 hours I was able to spot a total of 118 birds, and a total of 31 different types or species.

It's not at all unusual to spot even more than that here during the summer months. At this time of the year many of the smaller songbirds have migrated far south of here, some as far as South America.

Finding more than 35-40 species a little tougher this season

That makes it very hard to see more than 35-40 different species at any given time. While during the summer months one can see over 100 different types of birds if they're lucky and know what they're looking for.Sad to report that I can't add a eagle to the list, I've seen a pair flying through the area in the summer. I looked the list at GBBC just before I submitted this and Columbia is 1 species behind that of Louisville.

Now unless the weather takes a turn for the better today & tomorrow then it doesn't look as if we will surpass Louisville's numbers. The forecast for both days here are for rainy & windy conditions, which pretty much will make it almost impossible to spot any birds.

But personally I will keep a close eye out tomorrow and see what the weathers like, who knows maybe it will clear up earlier than is called for. It will be very cold & windy even if the rain moves out.

Serious bird watchers may want to join new group

I wish there was a way to get more of the birders together and start a serious group of bird watchers here in the county. If anyone is interested in doing this and would like to work on getting a group started. Then feel free to contact me. Only serious callers, please. (270) 384-5403.
