Three county roads now re-opened

(ADV) What's Cooking Today, Friday, February 15, 2008 in Adair County, KY (ADV)

Bridge approaches at three points on Sulphur Creek rebuilt yesterday to allow passage, but repaving will have to wait until Spring.

By Ed Waggener

Judge Ann Melton said this morning that all three roads closed because of bridge approach washouts had been re-opened as of yesterday, Thursday, February 14, 2008.

"Jobe and the road department crew did a wonderful job making the roads passable again," she said. "Jobe" is Jobe Darnell, Supervisor of the Adair County Road Department.

The crew members responsible for the quick repairs, CJE Administrative Assistant Lisa Lee said, were Lonnie Page, Terry Williams, Donnie Melson, and Billy Cowan. "We're blessed to have such capable operators," she said. The roads were closed at two low bridges on L. Hancock RD, and Purdy-Sano Sano as well as damage to the approaches on the new Grassy Springs Bridge at McGaha which had been rebuilt one year ago. The approaches to bridges were eroded by a raging Sulphur Creek on February 6, 2008.

Judge Melton did advise motorists to use extra care at the approaches. It will be several weeks before the approaches can be repaved.

The Adair County Road Department is out with graders working on flood damage, but conditions are difficult, Judge Melton said.

The CJE's office is still waiting to submit a request to Gov. Beshear for emergency funds for reconstruction work, estimated earlier in the week to be at least $160,000, though that total may be higher."We're waiting for District Eight Engineer Jeff Dick to come and inspect the roads and approve the request," CJE AA Lisa Lee said. "We're hoping that is today," she said, "but it may be sometime next week."

ACRD photo shows dramatic force of water

2008-02-15 - L. Hancock Road at Sulphur Creek - Photo By Lisa Lee.
LISA LEE took this photo of the washout at the L. Hancock Road Bridge from the Chestnut Corners approach near Bradley Irvin's home. The water picked up the pavement, intact, and curved it down into Sulphur Creek as though it were a piece of black ribbon. Adair County Road Supervisor Jobe Darnell is standing on the pavement near the stream. Latest word on the February 6, 2008 flood damage is that repair estimates are now over $250,000. The approach is now passable, but not repaved.
