The Great Backyard Bird Count starts today and continues through Monday, February 18, 2008.

The event is sponsored by the National Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Last year, no Ospreys were reported from Adair County. At least one regularly fishes at Arnold's Landing. And, no Eagles were reported in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Turkeys were far under reported.

By way of suggestion, birders in the Great Adair County Disaspora are encouraged to be home in Adair County to aid the local Backyard Bird Count.

While we at ColumbiaMagazine.com wish the reports could be "Adair County," there's no option for that. For that reason, we hope that all Adair County Counts go in as "Columbia, KY," to improve our standings.

In the past few years, the reports from Adair County have increased dramatically. At ColumbiaMagazine.com, we're hoping that 2008 will draw the greatest response yet.

2008-02-15 - Frankfort, KY - Photo By Pen.
PEN TOOK THIS PHOTO on January 12, 2007 in Frankfort, KY, and wrote: "Considered by many to be a nuisance at best, the European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) was introduced to the Americas in the late 1800's. They are now common and widespread throughout North America. While they can appear dull from a distance, they do have rather striking plumage when viewed closely in the right light." In 2007, four checklist counted 256 of the birds, the second highest number on the Adair County Backyard Bird Count for 2007.
