SCC to hold February Open Screen Tests for upcoming film

By David J. Cazelet, Jr.

Somerset Community College Theatre's Digital Video Productions will have two separate days of open screen testing for Somerset Community College's summer feature-length film, Nancy Barry's Big Case. The screen tests will be held on Saturday, February 9, and Saturday, February 16, 2008.

Project director Steve Cleberg has announced that sign-ups for the screen tests will begin at 12:30pmCT on February 9 and February 16, 2008 in the lobby of Stoner Little Theatre. The theatre is located in Stoner Hall on the SCC Somerset Campus.

The tests will take place in SCC's Stoner Little Theatre and will begin at 1:00pmET/noonCT on a first-come, first-served basis. Individuals interested in taking part, but unable to attend one of these dates, are encouraged to contact the SCC Theatre Coordinator at Steve.Cleberg@kctcs.edu.

Nancy Barry's Big Case is an off-beat romantic comedy set on the fictional campus of Summer Falls Community College. In many ways, it pays homage to the Bonita Granville "Nancy Drew" films of the 1930's with a mystical twist. The film is set in the present day and follows the story of a young college girl, seemingly stuck in the 1950's, who tries to solve the mystery of a lifetime.

Individuals not interested in a speaking role, but who would like to serve as a non-speaking extra or as a crew member need not attend a screen test. Those individuals, who are interested in such a role, should contact Steve Cleberg at the above email address. Cleberg will then instruct them concerning how to get on the contact roster for these assignments.

Those who will take part in the screen tests should be prepared to fill out a short "Screen Test Information Sheet." This will include "Availability to Shoot" information on the back of the form.

Participants will also be asked to sign an "Individual Release" form. This signed form will give SCC permission to film the participant for the screen test and for the film project itself, should he or she be cast..

Those testing are encouraged to wear camera friendly clothing. No solid whites or solid blacks. Avoid bright red. Do not wear clothing that has tight patterns, particularly tight stripes.

Those who wish to test need to contact Cleberg at the email address above to obtain the short scenes that should be memorized for the screen test. These short scenes were kept simple so that they could be easily memorized. They were also kept open to interpretation so that talent could demonstrate basic acting ability regardless of which role they were interested in. The test will involve taking a series of shots of the actor performing the scenes with another actor or reader.

Somerset Community College's Digital Video Productions has been in the filmmaking process for about four years. SCC's last film project, The Stronger, was an official entry into the Bluegrass Independent Film Festival this past September.

Somerset Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education. SCC has campuses in Somerset and London, centers in Clinton, McCreary, Russell and Casey Counties.
