Earthquake Awareness Week is February 3-9, 2008

Adair EMD announces several classes across the state on for earthquake preparedness. Schools Earthquake drill is Tuesday, February 5, 2008

It is now less than one more week until Earthquake Awareness Week.

Several educational activities are planned during the week, both locally in Adair County, and across the state of Kentucky.



Governor Beshear has signed an executive proclamation declaring February 3 - 9, 2008 as Earthquake Awareness Week in Kentucky. The Governor said he recognizes the need to be aware of the risks and to be prepareded for any all all natural and man-made disasters, including earthquakes, and encourages everyone to educate and prepare themselves.

Earthquakes can and do happen at any time and at any location throughout Kentucky.#Lori King, KyEM Earthquake Program Coordinator, said, "Earthquakes are basically unpredictable. At best scientists make predictions based upon historical activity, but with so much uncertainty the possibility of a major earthquake effecting Kentucky can not be taken for granted."

February 4, 2008, Earthquake 101 class in Paducah

On February 4th an Earthquake 101 Class will be held from 8-4:00 Central Time at Crounse Center Room 101 WKCTC (previously PCC), Paducah, CUSEC, the Kentucky Geological Survey, KyEM and CDC will be presenting the class.To register simply e-mail Lori King at lori.king@ky.ngb.army.mil The course is free.

February 5, 2008: Duck, Cover, and Hold drill in schools

On February 5, 2008 at 10:07amET/9:07CT, an earthquake "Duck, Cover and Hold drill will be conducted. Schools are being contacted via the Kentucky Center for School Safety to conduct the drill. KCSS is also distributing the survey to schools. An Emergency Alert System message will go out during the drill.

The EAS Message for the drill will read as follows:

"At this time Kentucky is conducting its annual earthquake drill. On this day in 1812 one of the largest earthquakes to occur in the central United States occurred. The quake was so strong that it rang church bells in Boston, Massachusetts and Charlestown, South Carolina. It could happen again at any time and could have devastating effects. Are you prepared? If you need more information on being prepared for earthquakes and other types of emergencies, contact your local emergency manager or visit http://kyem.ky.gov/"

February 7, 2008, Non-Structural Mitigation call at Owensboro

On February 7th a Non-Structural Mitigation Class will be held at the Green River District Health Department in Owensboro. The class will take place from 9-4:00CT.
