Eleveta Sparks honored for 28 years of service at LWC Library Director Phil Hanna gives send-off tribute; staff sings, "Happy Trails." Columbia archivist so dear to alumni, students, flashes trademark humor at retirement reception on Friday By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs Longtime Lindsey Wilson College employee Eleveta Sparks was honored on Friday morning, January 25, 2008, for more than a quarter-century of service to the college. Sparks was honored at a reception held at the Katie Murrell Library. Friday was Sparks' last day as an employee at the college, which she served in a variety of roles. Her most recent responsibility was as a library assistant on the Murrell Library staff, which included oversight of the college's archives rooms. Library Director Phil Hanna said Sparks has enriched the Lindsey Wilson community in many ways. "In her nearly 28 years here, Mrs. Sparks has worked in virtually every nook and cranny of the library," Hanna said. "She has supervised student workers, kept the shelves orderly, watered our plants, and organized the library archives. She has provided countless hours of service to the Lindsey family and to the community, locating information in the archives, digging up information on the Wilson family, and providing bits and pieces of family information from yearbooks and newspaper clippings for alumni and their descendents." Sparks was presented with a plaque by the Murrell Library staff and Lindsey Wilson community in appreciation of her 28 years of service. She was also presented several cards and gifts from members of the Lindsey Wilson faculty and staff. Those honoring Sparks joined together in an unrehearsed send-off of the Dale Evans song "Happy Trails." After singing commenced, Sparks was given the opportunity to say a few words. "I'm not giving a speech, but I want to say thank you for it," said Sparks. "But I didn't want you to do all of these things because I said in the beginning, I don't want gifts, I don't want any fanfare, I just want to go home." A roar of laughter followed.
