Lance Bean Travelogue: A visit to salt source Lance Bean is an Adair Countian working as a private contractor on public works in Djibouti, Africa, near the Suez canal. His National Geographic style photos posted last week proved quite popular. This week, he sends photos taken on a day trip across the desert, though mountainous terrain to the coastal salt flats. By Lance Bean, Djibouti, Africa CM Middle East Correspondent Saturday a few of us took an all day trip to travel to Lake Assai north of Djibouti. This lake was formed by a volcano eruption and is the 4th lowest place on earth. Local tribes mine salt here for trade at the Red Sea ports. In the first 3 pictures we are traveling across the desert and through the mountains. The people who live here are of the Afar tribe.Their homes are made of stone. I was told it was for protection from the wild dogs and hyenas that attack their goats herds. Most of this area is recovering from 5 years of tribal wars which finally ended in 1999. The area is being rebuilt with aid from the UN and World Bank. The last pictures I am sending are at Lake Assai salt flats where the temperature was in about 90 degree F range, for the high. It is very breezy. I am standing with a local salt trader in the photo. Take care and God bless you, To write to the author: Lance Bean, PAE Lockheed Martin, Camp LeMonier, FPO AE 09363 9998 Related: A Blue Waters Rally with account of voyage from Sri Lanka to Djibouti, with threat of piracy and with stops ashore and another visit to Lake Assai.
