COLUMBIA MAGAZINE.COM POLITICS

Adair/Taylor race getting more interesting: Asa James Swan, Lindsey Wilson College history professor and Campbellsville resident, expected to file today with Rep. Mobley's blessing. He would face Adair native and Campbellsville resident Russell Montgomery, and possibly opposition from Columbia & Campbellsville communications chief Alan Reed, a resident of Columbia. There have been no new filings in the 51st House District since Russell Montgomery, Campbellsville Republican Russell Montgomery, and Adair County native, filed for the office. But expect another today. Asa James Swan, Lindsey Wilson history instructor, who is a resident of Campbellsville, is expected to file today.

If he does, he is likely to get the blessing of current State Representative Russ Mobley, and possibly several other top Taylor and Adair County supporters, political and/or otherwise. Rep. Mobley is expected to announce his retirement in concert with an Asa James Swan announcement, Taylor County sources say.

Swan is a the oldest child of Dr. Terry and Cinda Swan, also Lindsey Wilson professors.

Asa Swan was born in Lexington, KY, grew up in Adair and Taylor Counties, and attended Adair County, Campbellsville City, and Taylor County schools before receiving an AA degree with honors from Lindsey Wilson College. During his Lindsey Wilson education, he was the youngest student body president in the United States.

Most recently, he has served as transportation legislatative liason for the Gov. Fletcher administration, and earned high marks for getting all his projects, including a historic number for Adair and Taylor Counties, through the General Assembly and to the Governor's desk for his signature.

He also worked as in Washington for Second District U.S. Representative Ron Lewis, the representative for Taylor County. Prior to that, he was an intern in the campaign of Elizabeth Dole for the Republican nomination for President.

Besides his Lindsey associate degree, Asa Swan has a BA from Huntington University located in the hometown of former President Dan Quayle. At Huntington, he graduated Magna Cum Laude, and was a Rhodes scholar nominee during his senior year. He now holds an M.A. in history from Western Kentucky University.

He said, last week, that he thinks his legislative liason experience will be a great advantage. "I'll will be doing all that I can to win the Republican nominee," he said. "As soon as I file, I will be raising the funds necessary to wage a successful campaign. I already have many committed supporters who have pledged their help."

Swan added, "I'm looking forward to making the case for why I believe I am the most qualified person to serve in this position. With four General Assemblies under my belt, I know that I can be effective for the people of Adair and Taylor counties on the first day of next year's General Assembly."

Asa Swan says he is a conservative Republican, with views close to those of Rep. Lewis, Rep. Mobley, and Senator Vernie McGaha.

Of great interest in the race is how Republican leaders in the two counties will respond to the candidacies of Swan, Russell Montgomery, or Alan Reed or other prominent persons known to be consider the race.

Prior to filing, Swan said he had made visits to as many Republican leaders in both counties, as he could. One is CJE Ann Melton, who, at this point, is not taking sides in the Republican primary. Another is Campbellsville Mayor Brenda Allen, whose endorsement could also be pivotal.

No one has yet filed against Senator McGaha, Speaker Richards
No one had filed by the weekend for other races being closely followed here. Senator Vernie McGaha (R-S15) of the 15th House District, which includes Adair County, remains unopposed. Adair Countian Jody Richards (D-H20), the longest serving Speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives, who represents Warren County, remain unopposed. And, most observers don't expect serious challenges to them.

House Minority Leader Jeff Hoover (R-H83) who has a law practice in Columbia and who is Attorney for the Adair County School Board, has not yet filed, but is expected to do so.

COLUMBIAMAGAZINE.COM was able to get this impromptu snapshot of Asa James Swan, the Lindsey Wilson College history professor who is expected to file for the 51st KY House District seat today. At the time, Swan was the transportation legislative liason for Gov. Ernie Fletcher. He was, he said, the only legislative liason who was able to get 100% of his targeted bills back to Gov. Fletcher for his signature.
