2008 Election: Alan Reed is (R), may run; Senator McGaha files

COLUMBIA MAGAZINE.COM POLITICS

Filing deadline is January 29, 2008: Alan Reed, listed in previous article as a Democrat, is a Republican. And he is strongly considering a race for 51st District Representative. Registration of Republicans in Adair and Taylor relatively close with Adair County having only a 380 registration advantage in GOP; but Democrats are majority in Taylor County, and Taylor County has 3,443 more voters, total, than Adair

By Ed Waggener
ColumbiaMagazine.com politics Senator Vernie McGaha has filed for re-nomination as senator from the 15th Kentucky Senate District. The Adair County native represents Adair, Casey, Pulaski, and Russell Counties. He has served the district since 1997 and is extremely popular in his home counties. PROFILE

So far, Adair County native Russell Montgomery is the only candidate to file thus far in the 51st House District race. Montgomery, now of Campbellsville, has run previously as a Democrat, but is now re-registered as a Republican.

The article posted Wednesday on ColumbiaMagazine which included some two dozen names of people who come to mind as possible candidates for 51st District Representative candidates included one big mislabeling: Alan Reed is not a Democrat. He is a Republican. And he is seriously giving thought to making the race. Click here to read earlier article

Reed is co-owner of Shoreline Communications, the parent company of the Big Dawg in Campbellsville, and WHVE, The WAVE, 92.7 in Adair County. In addition to his on-air and management duties with the communications firm, he also teaches at Campbellsville University. "I think I have strong ties in both counties," he said.

The assumption in the article was made on the mistaken assumption that he was of the same political faith as his father, a staunch Democrat in Casey County. "My dad is a Democrat," Reed said, "but most of my people are Republicans, especially on my mother's side."

It was a reasonable assumption for us to have made, even though we ought to have known better. For some reason science hasn't yet explained, boys often go with their mother's political parties. Speaker Jody Richards, of Garlin, Adair County, another child of a mixed marriage - his dad, Demaree, was a Republican, his mother a Democrat - sided with his mother.

In counties where being a Democrat is a defiant badge of courage, such as Cumberland County, it is not unheard of for a father to become upset and disinherit a son, for a time, who does not understand the wisdom of the patriarchal choice of political parties, and strays to the Republicans. So we should have remembered this proclivity of some sons to follow the political parties of their mothers and some fact checking was in order before labeling Alan Reed a Democrat. Our apologies to Mr. Reed.

How the two 51st District county registrations compare

Adair County Deputy Court Clerk Libby Radford and Taylor County Court Clerk Mark Carney supplied some figures which may be useful in analyzing and strategizing in the upcoming Kentucky House race:1) There are more voters in Taylor County than in Adair

  2. Total register voters Adair County (10/07) - 13,387
2) There more Democrats, by more than double, in Taylor County
  1. Taylor County Democrats - 8,374
  2. Adair County Democrats - 3,768
3) There are more Republicans in Adair County than in Taylor
  1. Adair County Republicans - 8,173
  2. Taylor County Republicans - 7,793
4) There are more independents in Taylor County than Adair
