Kentucky Historical Society offers insight on Kentucky's Lincoln Gala is February 11, 2008, at Kentucky Center for the Arts; February 12, 2008, official kick-off in Hodgenville for Abraham Lincoln bicentennial By Alice Rogers, Kentucky Historical Society Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story The Kentucky Historical Society is offering Kentucky legislators and the public a look at the key people, places, and events connected to Kentucky's Abraham Lincoln story during the 2008 Kentucky General Assembly in observance of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commemoration. Each day during the legislative session, legislators will view a vignette highlighting the people, places, and events that establish Lincoln as a Kentuckian along with an illustration or portrait from the collections of the Kentucky Historical Society and other repositories. This information will also be available for the public to view on the Legislative Research Commission online. Topics range from Lincoln's family roots and early childhood in Kentucky to the significant relationships Lincoln formed after leaving the commonwealth which would influence his political career and his presidency. On February 12, 2008 Kentuckians can be a part of history during the official kick-off ceremonies for the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site in Hodgenville. This event is free and open to the public. The inaugural program begins at 10:30amET/9:30CT, but the site will be open to the public beginning at 7:00amET/6:00amCT Bus transportation will be provided and public parking is available. Featured invited guests include President George W. Bush, Governor Steven L. Beshear, Pulitzer-Prize-winner Doris Kearns Goodwin, and actor Sam Waterston from Law & Order. "Kentucky's Abraham Lincoln," the KHS HistoryMobile exhibit, will debut at the event before it travels across the state. On February 11, 2008, a gala evening for the National Kickoff of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration will be held at the Kentucky Center for the Arts in Louisville at 7:00pmET/6:00pmCT. The event will feature the Louisville Orchestra, Angela Brown, Soprano; NPR's Bob Edwards as master of ceremonies, Sam Waterston from Law & Order portraying Lincoln and more. KHS operates the Old State Capitol, the Kentucky Military History Museum, and its headquarters, the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History. Since 1999, the thirty- million- dollar Center has welcomed more than one million visitors.
