SCP Christmas Card reminds forester of trees needs

Trees along Burkesville Street looked like trees, not tall bushes. Trees were topped; major need was prudent pruning

Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

We have progressed in many ways, but in this picture there is a great example of one way we have regressed.

Look how stately the trees are standing along the street. They have not been topped. Therefore, the trees still look like trees and not big bushes.

The trees in the picture have not been pruned either. A little pruning to remove some lower branches and the trees would be even more stately.

The bottom line is if you have a tree that has not been topped, don't top it; prune it. If you fit this category, call a professional for advice.

If you are wanting to plant trees make sure the specie you select fits your vertical limitations. Horizontal limitations most times can be made to fit with correct pruning techniques.

If you are preparing to build and want to save existing trees then there are some important things to know before beginning to do site preparation for building.

If you have a tree that has already been topped, in most cases you will need to continue topping. There are some really good tree toppers around town, use them if you are in this category.

An important thing to remember is that topping a tree always shortens a trees life and diminishes the quality of life to the point that little twigs and limbs are continually dying.

In many cases the tree will die within a year. Beech is an example of a tree that doesn't take topping at all.
