The cat and the great turnip A.L. Sinclair grew

2007-12-28 - Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
I BELIEVE IT WAS THE BIGGEST TURNIP I EVER SAW. Surely one for the World Record Book of Guinesses. It was given to me by Adair County gardener extraordinaire, A.L. Sinclair. It was intended to make several messes of boiled turnips for Geniece Marcum, my mother-in-law, who does love them so. Mrs. Marcum used to drive over 50 miles round trip from Metcalfe County just for the turnips at the Circle R Restaurant. Yesterday, when she arrived home to Columbia, she wanted to know what had happened to the major part of the big turnip, and would not believe that the cat ate it. But see for yourself. We're hoping Mr. Sinclair will buy the story, too, and tender another. A.L., by the way, burned his plant bed last week. A record, he believes. Times are changing, from when the late Woodson Nell had to sneak onto neighbor's porches to give them turnips they wouldn't take in person, to the high dollar 6-lemon sized turnips for $1.99 in the produce markets today.- ED WAGGENER
