66th Wedding Anniversary: Milton & Helen Stephens By Ed Waggener Milton and Helen Stephens of Columbia will celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary on Sunday, December 22, 2007. They were married in 1941, just a 15 days after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and dashed any hopes Milton Stephens had of being released from the U.S. Army after one year of service. He had been drafted. "I was on KP," he recalls, "I was looking to get out after my one year enlistment was up." But that wasn't to be. The couple had planned all along to be married, but hadn't set a date. When he was sent home on a brief furlough at Christmas that year, they decided to commit, regardless of the war. They were married in the parlor of her parents, Finis E. and Gladys Burton, on KY 206 in what is now the Beulah Chapel Church neighborhood. They didn't get to leave on a formal honeymoon. They had just three days together. He had to leave on Christmas Day, to report back to Ft. Custer, Michigan. From Ft. Custer, he was in the first American division leave The States in World War II. They were reunited in May of 1945 as he was waiting for a discharge while recovering from the wounds which won him his second Purple Heart. Since then, the family has prospered, as he farmed, she taught school and the children, grandchildren, and now great grandchildren have added to the family luster. The children are sons Michael Lee and Richard. Mike Stephens is a Columbia pharmacist and businessman who has two children, son Lee and daughter LaGene Corbin. Their other son, Richard Stephens and wife Marilyn Burton Stephens, are the parents of two sons, Chris and Ryan. The Stephens have three great grandchildren, Meredith Corbin, and Hayley and Trey Stephens. This story was posted on 2007-12-19 10:56:00
