Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

My fondest memories of the bottling company was that as a child growing up in Green Countyand being astudent in the Green County School system.

The Greensburg Bottling Company would treat every kid to free bottle of Double Cola orSki, a bag of chips and a pencil. The Greensburg Bottling company, owned then bythe late Joseph Despain, was good to every student and really supported the Green County School system.

There was a time in Green County that you could only buy Double Cola products in resturants.

I remember when I was young I was having lunch at the Kozy Korner Restaurant in Greensburg and I had ordered a Coca-Cola and the waitress brought me a Double Cola.

She informed me that they didn't sell Coke! It was a true sign of loyalty to the Greensburg Bottling Company.

Today the bottling company is history.

The plant sold the Ski franchise to Clark distributing. Clark owns the franchise for Coca-Cola and now distributes Ski on the daily route. As far as Double Cola is concerned no one in the market is distributing it.

Greensburg, KY, bottling plant was good to county school kids

2007-12-18 - Depot St., Columbia, KY - Photo From the collection of Larry Smith.
Larry Smith, Southern Kentucky historian and The WAVE 92.7 FM radio news anchor, finds this a fascinating old photo. "My fondest memories of the bottling company was that as a child growing up in Green Countyand being astudent in the Green County School system," he writes. "The Greensburg Bottling Company would treat every kid to free bottle of Double Cola orSki, a bag of chips and a pencil. The Greensburg Bottling company, owned then bythe late Joseph Despain, was good to every student and really supported the Green County School system." Mr. DeSpain was a willing supporter of school and church advertising projects, and his photo, above, was widely distributed through those media, Larry Smith says.

Old Photo from Larry Smith: Pretty girl at Millerfield

2007-12-19 - Millerfield, KY - Photo From the collection of Larry Smith.
MILLERFIELD, KY Larry Smith, WHVE FM 92.7 radio news anchor, whose Double Cola memorabilia is extensive, sent this photo he calls, "Adair County girl." She is Linda Burton, the daughter of the store owner's who now lives on Snake Creek Road in Adair. She is photographed at a sign advertising her parent's store at Millerfield, on KY 76 in northeastern Adair County. Smith has one of the signs in his collection. The outfit the girl is wearing would make it appear to be a dress up occasion. If anyone knows the particulars, we'd love to hear from you.
