Tony Harvey: Whooping cranes are off to Tennessee!

Report from Tony Harvey
Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

Tony Harvey called in at 8:35am with a report that the Operation Migration Whooping Cranes flew from the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery this morning.

"An ultralight went up, briefly," he said, "and came back down, and a Fish & Wildlife man told me that looked bad." But about 10 minutes later, he said, the flight was on again.

"It was about 7:30am when they got underway," he said. The flight became with 14 cranes following one ultralight and 3 following another. Harvey said that, in all, four ultralights are in this fleet.

He said he wouldn't have missed it for anything. "This may be the last year they fly through here," he said. "There have been so many problems this year they are thinking of traveling a more western path, in the Mississippi flyway. "They are way behind schedule this year, he said.

About 12-15 people were on hand for this morning's event, coming from as far away as Frankfort. "It was an emotional time," he said, "I don't think there were any whose eyes were misty at the sight."

Harvey plans to send photos after he gets back to his home in the Tabor Community on KY 704 later this morning.
