Nick Flatt benefit is Dec. 8, 2007, at Salem Elementary

By Karen Loveless

Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

A group of individuals in Russell County is hosting a benefit auction for 14 year old Nick Flatt and his family Saturday, December 8, 2007, at Salem Elementary School, beginning at 4:00pmCT. We are hoping friends in Adair County will help the family of this little boy.

Nick has been diagnosed with Batten Disease, which attacks the nervous system.

At the age of 4, Nick was blind, and the disease has slowly decreased his motor skills. Nick is now having multiple seizures daily and is in a wheelchair.

His speech is worsening, as well as his mental status.

Nick is the son of Barry and Glenda Flatt, and has a little sister Taylor. Barry sings bass with the Southern Harmony Quartet, and is employed in Somerset.

Glenda is a full time caregiver to Nick. While Barry does have insurance, it is not nearly meeting the needs of Nick. The family is in need of nursing assistance, as well as medical items for the home, and doctors bills.

Several donations have been gathered for the auction, however we do need more items.

Volunteers will gladly come and pick up any items people want to donate. We have a few donations of gift certificates, prints, and merchandise.

This Christmas, please show your Christmas Spirit of giving to this family. You may contact Connie McFarland (270) 585-1634 or Lori Bernard (270) 866-7242 for more information.
