Whoopers: Takeoff from Russell, if tried, at about 6:45amCT To go directly to Operation Migration "In the Field," Click Here. Wonderful story by Joe Duff, one of OM's founders, and timely updates by Liz Condie from OM HQ, and others Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story Liz Condie of Operation Migration said in a telephone interview last night that if the 17 whooping cranes do fly this morning, Wednesday, December 5, 2007, they will likely leave at around 6:45amCT. She said that if photographers go to the area, to remember to check in at the Fish Hatchery to find the best viewing area and to respect the cranes wildness. Operation Migration makes every effort to protect the birds from human contact, she said. However, she said, many of the best photographs taken of the migration come from the Russell County location, at the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, at 50 Kendall Road, below Wolf Creek Dam in Russell County. "If you go," she said, "err on the early side. They could leave a little earlier than 6:45am. When we fly," she said, "we try to get underway just after sunrise to take advantage of the calmer air then."
