Yates drills in well with great promise on Burris farm near Bliss By Ed Waggener ColumbiaMagazine.com story There's another promising strike on the Danny and Debbie Burris farm at their farm located near Bliss on the south side of the Louie B. Nunn Parkway at milemarker 44, but accessed from the Jones Chapel Road on Willie Nell Road. The well was drilled in 10 feet into the Murfreesboro on Saturday, December 1, 2007, at around 1:30pmCT by Don Yates Drilling Company on a lease owned by American Oil & Gas of Lexington, KY. Note January 19, 2008: To see story on email from Gary Milby abouta lawsuit claiming ownership by Mid-America Click here No one would predict the production which may come from this well, except to say that the first show was really good and they were hoping for it might match production of a second Burris farm strike. Another well on the farm, Burris #2 is currently keeping more than two tankers a day hauling it's production, according to farm owner Danny Burris, with 215 barrels pumped every 24 hours. That well is owned by John Burness and Bill Allen. Drilling continued Saturday in anticipation of hitting additional pools in the Murfreesboro. On Saturday afternoon, the field in which the well was hit was buzzing with activity, crawling with neighbors and oilmen coming and going from Flatwoods to Lexington, some there just to get a look. Cell phones were in constant communication, and some even had cell phone links to their laptops to access the internet from the field. While in times past, communities were bound together socially by quilting bees and hog killings, today, in the Gradyville area, that function seems to have been taken over by oil well drilling parties. It was that way Saturday. Many of the neighbors just came to help out, including Barry Hamlett, who owns the legendary Willie Nell #2 and a more recent well which is pumping in the 55 barrel range now. Blake Cundiff, who works weekdays with Terry Withers, was helping Don Yates with the bit changes on Saturday. And fellow oil land owner Barry Hamlett, who, with brother Ricky Hamlett, owns the balance of the Willie Nell farm not owned by the Burrises, was over just to help out. "It looks good," Hamlett said. Mrs. Burris, Debbie, said credited the Sugar, the mother of Pet Idol 2006 Ladybug, with being their lucky charm. Veteran oil man Terry Goff was said the outlook is very good for oil in the area. "I've never seen so many Murfreesboro wells in one area," he said. The area was one he described as bound by Adair, Green Metcalfe, Allen and Clinton Counties. He was at the field with his son Clint Moss, who works with him. A second son, Kevin, is now a lawyer in Lexington, KY. Goff, who has been in the oil business since graduating from high school in Greensburg in 1957, said the outlook for oil production looks really good to him. "We're going back into the field over at Pickett's Chapel where the wells were capped either because they weren't profitable at the old prices or the owners didn't want the hassle of dealing with the EPA. We're drilling between those wells. It doesn't take a whole lot of oil at $90 to make a profit these days." Goff estimated the oil production in Adair County at 485-500 barrels a day. Besides the income from oil, there's a boom in the demand for good oilfield hands, and equipment prices are soaring. Now, one oilfield man said, "When they find out the price of a piece of oil field equipment, and it's a price they're willing to pay, they ask how many you have," and then, he said, "they'll say they will take them all."
