Garden Club member husband shocked at gifts brought to home With one photograph By Barbara Armitage Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story Members of the Garden Club from the left are Jennifer Smith, and the ghost photographer met to give fellow gardener Jennifer Smith a growing start. Members of the Garden Club met recently to give fellow gardener Jennifer Smith a "growing" start. Members attending, including Jennifer Smith, were Dora Mae Stone, Mimi Bairstow, Ginger Swift, Lucille Lemmon, Mary Knight, Jane Grant, Mary Sharp. Jennifers husband Sam was shocked to learn that members of the Garden Club would be showing up bearing gifts of garbage to add to the new compost pile. These Wise Women came bearing gifts of everything from banana peels to horse manure tossing it all into the mix. Im sure that even Sam will have to admit the benefits of composting when Jennifers flowers are blooming. Since more than one-third of all garbage in landfills is organic and compost-able it only makes good sense and cents to put it to a better use. Organics in landfills can actually cause problems when they are exposed to water. As the material decomposes a natural chemical called leachate is formed. In your compost pile this helps move nutrients into the soil. In a landfill it can pick up contaminates from other garbage polluting ground water. If youve ever thought about composting you can learn how from any member of the Garden Club. Join us at our Holiday get together on December 13, 2007 at 1:00pmCT time. Please bring something good to snack on and a live plant to give away. The party is at Lucille Lemmons home in Columbia. For more information or direction call Barbara Armitage at (270) 250-2979.
