Christmas in Columbia starts today with Rotary Breakfast

It's here today! The Christmas Season officially starts today and tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday, December 1 and 2, 2007, in Columbia, Adair County, Kentucky.

The theme of the 17th Annual Christmas in Columbia Celebrations this year will be "A Golden Christmas," celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce. Christmas in Columbia will cover two days, Saturday, December 1, 2007, and Sunday, December 2, 2007.

The highlight of the celebration will be the Parade Under the Lights, which is scheduled for 6:00pm Saturday evening, December 1, 2007. The rain date is is December 8, 2007. Prize money for the parade entries totals $1,825, with the top float prize being $400.



The lineup for the parade is 2:00pm to 4:00pmCT on Industrial Drive off South KY 55. Parade staging areas have been provided by McCammish Manufacturing Co, IMO Industries, Flavo-Rich, and the Adair County Little League. Rules require that all entries be registered in advance of parade lineup and judging.

Judging for the parade will be done during the parade, with awards made after the parade at the Chamber Building.

The deadline for the parade entry is Monday, November 26, 2007. There is no fee or charge for entering.

The judging will be based on 100 point total, with 20 points each for 1) Use of lights. 2) Theme. 3) Originality. 4) Creativity. 5) Overall.

Prizes for floats will be as follows:

Float Division: 1st Place, $400.00. 2nd Place, $300.00. 3rd Place, $200.00. 4th Place, $100.00.

Out of County Float Entries: 1st Place, $350.00. 2nd Place, $250.00.

Non-Float Division: 1st Place, $100. 2nd Place, $75.00. 3rd Place, $50.00

The rules specify that no Four-Wheelers are allowed.

Some prize money will be given away just for being present. Three hundred dollars will be given away in two drawings at Santa's Dream House.

  • 1:00pm to 3:00pmCT: Children's Arts & Crafts by Adair County 4-H in the Adair Annex Basement
  • 1:00pm: Christmas Music by Encore on the Square, Downtown Columbia
  • 1:00pm to 3:00pmCT: Historical Readings during "Touch of Christmas" at the Trabue-Russell House; refreshments will be served from 1:30pm to 2:30 pm.
  • 2:00pm: Christmas Music performed by Hearts of Praise
  • 3:00pm to 4:00pmCT: Santa Claus at Santa's Dream shop
  • 3:00pmCT: Christmas Music by Encore on the Square, Downtown Columbia
  • 3:30pm to 6:30pmCT: Old Fashioned Carriage Rides, Downtown Columbia
  • 4:00pmCT: Dream Depot will perform a Christmas Show. Reservations (270) 384-2657 and (270) 384-2115.
  • 5:00pmCT: Official Ceremony for the Lighting of the Christmas Tree
    • Mayor Pat Bell will read a Christmas Story
    • Encore will lead the community in a Christmas Carol
    • Official lighting of the Christmas Tree
  • 6:00pm: Christmas Under the Lights Parade
    Parade starts on Jamestown Street at Industrial Drive and north on Jamestown Street to the Square and Exits Square on Burkesville Street.
