Judge Weddle finds Wellie Paul Grant incompetent to stand trial ColumbiaMagazine.com story After a hearing which lasted several hours, Adair Circuit Judge James G. Weddle ruled last evening in Adair Circuit Court that Wellie Paul Grant is incompetent to stand trial at this time. Judge Weddle also found that Grant is a threat to himself and others. At Judge Weddle's order, Grant is being transported "as soon as possible" to Eastern State Hospital in Lexington, KY, where he is ordered to be kept a minimum of 360 days. Grant was charged in the June 10, 2006 Beech Grove Separate Baptist Church picnic grounds shooting of popular Columbia businessman Rex Coffey, who died June 11, 2006, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, TN. In his ruliing, Judge Weddle made the following findings of fact and conclusion of law:
Attorneys in the case were Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Wright of Liberty and, for the defense, Robert Bertram of Jamestown, KY. This story was posted on 2007-11-28 08:33:47
